The meeting was held at the home
of Stefani Tweedy. Members
present were: Rosanne Brackney,
Karin Coppess, Mary Lou Jenne,
Sandi Ravine, Aviva Beach, Linda
Spurlock, Mark Schmitt, Laurel
Lefebvre, Sue Rapp, Holly Ferguson,
Sue Rapp, Carolyn Calhoun Dillahunt,
Will and Teresa Bron
The meeting for August 5th will
be at the home of Rosanne Brackney.
Report on our Parelli clinic that
was presented by Linda Spurlock
and hosted by Sue Rapp.
It was fun! We had 7 people
with horses and two observers.
Linda coached us through the 7
games, using her horse Tommy as
an example, then lending a hand
to those that needed some help. Out
of the 7 horses there, I’m
not sure there were two alike in
personality. All seemed to
respond differently to what was
asked of them.
We took a break a little over half
way through, (it was HOT!) and
then continued on. Afterwards
we pulled up chairs and had lunch
and a nice social get-together.
SHOWS:
The Yakima Valley Wine Country
Classic is coming Aug 22nd, 23rd
and 24th. Linda Spurlock
got 6 jump classes added to their
list. They will also be using
our beautiful jumps at the show,
and we were wondering if OPRC would
like to sponsor some of the classes.
A motion was made by Sue Rapp that
we sponsor the High Point Jump
Award, and it was unanimously seconded. I
believe the cost was $25.00
Mike M. via email, wanted to know
if the club would like to send
a donation to a horse rescue that
was located in the flooded area
of Iowa. We would
like to get some more info on this
first.
Sandi R. said she saw a park in
Richland that had horse trails,
but she’d sent the link to
Lisa, (who wasn’t in attendance). Perhaps
Lisa can check it out when she
is back from vacation, or forward
it on to the club?
Will and Teresa Bron competed in
a Combined Driving event with one
of their Friesians (Gabby?). It
was held near Onalaska, WA. The
weather was pretty hot and humid,
and they did well in the dressage,
but the marathon portion took it’s
toll. In the marathon, the
horse is hitched to the cart and
is timed. There are stops,
in which there is a specified rest
period and the horse is checked
by a vet. At the end of one
of the 10 minute rest periods,
their horse’s temperature
and respiration were still too
elevated and they weren’t
allowed to continue. Following
the Marathon would have been the “Hazzard” portion,
which Will was particularly looking
forward too. But, considering
this was their first competition,
and there were approx. 7 others
that were vetted out, they did
very well! We look forward to more
progress reports and wish them
success!!
As a side note to this, Laurel
mentioned that because of some
recent equine deaths in competition,
(notably Rolex), that Congress
is forming a committee to monitor
horse safety during such activities.
One more note on driving: Nationals
has added at D1 test configured
for those that would like to drive
instead of ride!
Lisa has July 26th on her calendar
for those who need to take their
D1 tests. Please call her and let
her know if you’re ready. 949-4196
July 12th is the date for the field
trip to see the Lipizzans in Goldendale.
Hopefully you all got the flier
that was emailed. June is
looking for some help. The fee
is $10, but if you can help you’ll
get in free. Email Sandi: Kssrfmy@aol.com if
you want to volunteer.
Holly brought some guests to the
meeting. Fortunately the
were still dormant inside the bag! They
are fly predators, from the Spalding
company. These are tiny wasps,
the size of ants. They lay
eggs on the fly pupa, which then
hatch and eat the fly pupa. Holly
is going to try and get a representative
from the company to come and tell
us more about them.
National Rally: Nationals
is putting out a list of classes,
you put on your show, complete
with judge and then send your results
in to them. They score all
clubs and then give out awards. Lisa
was wondering if we’d like
to look into doing this, perhaps
instead of our 2/3 Phase event.
Driving lessons: Ground driving,
or with a cart. Teaching
you and your horse how to drive,
beginning to advanced instructions.
Lessons are held at the Brons’ once
a month. email Stefani, Stefani6124@hotmail.com or
Teresa, Teresa@brondairy.com for
more info. Terri Jones is the one
who Will takes lessons from, and
if there were enough people she
would come for a weekend. The
approx. cost is $60.00.
Education: Laurel had us
form groups of four, in a practice
Rally. Depending on our current
rating, she read us questions from
the Equine Trivia game in which
the questions are categorized from
Beginner to Expert. We
got 2 points if the person being
asked the question got it right
on their own, or 1 point if you
had to confer with your team members.
She even had prizes for the team
with the most points! Another
fun, educational presentation! Thanks,
Laurel!
